A Word from language department

A year has gone since we last shared in glory of launching our first magazine. In this second issue, be in the know that English and Kiswahili (sanifu) still remain not only as the main proponents of good communication habits but also as a medium of academic and religious instruction.

Speaking in English and Kiswahili do alternate every week just to keep in check the viral effects of sheng and language used in social media in Kenya-a trend that has started rearing its ugly head even in exams. This department comes alive through Ms. Karanja, Mr. Nyaga, Mr. Namuye and Mr. Ambrose.

In the last twenty-five years, the department has realized the following results:

Form four 2014, 2015 2016 and beyond, have you got the message?

A number of activities have characterized this year. Members of this department did attend related academic workshops organized by the ministry: one at State House Girls’; the second at Moi Girls High School Nairobi. Many others are in the offing. We do look forward to our students getting a chance to participate in symposium within the county. However, they have had a chance to view theatrical dramatization of related compulsory set books by Jicho Four Productions. The optional set books are yet to be staged. These set books are The River and the Source, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Betrayal in the City, The Whale Rider, When the Sun Goes Down and other stories, Kidagaa kimemwozea, Mstahiki Meya and Damu Nyeusi. Besides all these, Inter-House language day is held yearly in second term.

Language department still has the view that Students can perform to their optimum level and achieve academic success with the help of efficient learning techniques and study activities.  Students who achieve top grades at the secondary and higher tertiary level, use several learning techniques to help them during their learning journey.  You may or may not be using these learning techniques.  Incorporating a few learning techniques in 2014-15 to your own unique study pattern will help you achieve greater fulfillment in your academics: Have a study, home-work and revision planner; Use Learning Techniques such as PQRST and SQ3R; Use Mind Maps, Drawings and Take Notes for Revision; Be attentive and participate in all classroom discussions. How about a sound reading culture?

Language competence is a vital educational outcome.
